Welcome! This is a website that everyone can build together. It's easy!

"Your Brand Is Not My Friend" is a reference to a conundrum Web 2.0 creates for many companies: when do your marketing efforts intrude on a space that consumers consider private, making you just another unwelcome intruder. Whether it's an outreach effort to bloggers who have nothing to do with your product, a blog that reads like a press release or a trying-way-too-hard MySpace page.

This Wiki started as a three-part post on The Toad Stool in June 2007 which was picked up on by many in the blogging community. The suggestion to create a wiki came from Christina Kerley, author of CK's Blog.

Readers are invited to list their own examples of marketers who made the mistake of thinking that consumers regarded them as friends and overstepped their bounds. Or, conversely, marketers who did the right thing by respecting limits and realizing that consumers don't really want to hear from them unless they've got something compelling to say.

American Express !!

I was required to get an AmEx card for business travel - and now I receive around 4 new card offers each week - at my house. I hate AmEx - and I don't like that I'm required to use it.

Thanks for the post. We need to come up with a better way of discovering and linking similar conversations. I blogged about this last week here (http://jburg.typepad.com/future/2007/11/have-you-hugged.html ) and here (http://jburg.typepad.com/future/2007/11/some-thoughts-o.html)

Last year VAVLe software decided to sell advertising space in their beloved Counter-Strike FPS game. Not only did it irk gamers to have ads built into the interface and plastered on the walls of the game, they didn't fit the "world" of Counter-Strike. I.e. A Counter-Terrorist unit sent into an ancient Aztec temple to foil a bombing attempt, might be surprised to find the walls covered with ads for sunglasses and energy drinks. They didn't even go to the trouble of a little art direction to blend them into the environment (i.e. look like a hand-posted bill or poster), just big rectangular ads that could have been pulled off a website. A pity, and imho an prime example of forcibly introducing blunt unwelcome communication into a consumers personal retreat.
